There are plenty of ways of making money online, but time and time again, I would hear about affiliate marketing… and it interested me.
Here’s the easiest way to explain what an affiliate marketer does:
You have a seller who wants to sell something online—whether it’s an actual, tangible item or an informational product such as a PDF book or video series—and the seller wants to connect with potential buyers to sell his or her product.
What an affiliate marketer does is connect the seller to a potential buyer. In short, the affiliate marketer is the bridge between the product being purchased.
And when the product is purchased, the affiliate marketer is paid by the seller—either a set dollar-amount or a percentage of the sale.
The wonderful thing about being an affiliate marketer is your revenue is unlimited—there are affiliate marketers who make tens of millions of dollars each and every year.
I became interested in affiliate marketing because I would receive tons of e-mails from the newsletters I had subscribed to and the e-mail senders would try to sell other people’s products and I figured if they’re writing and sending e-mails out each and every day they must be making decent money because they’re putting in a lot of effort.
Also, many of these affiliate marketers have created their own informational products to sell, so in reality, they’re trying to get the subscribers to their e-mails to buy both their programs/products and the programs/products of others.
So my story is a bit weird—but it’s cool—I promise.
I moved back to Los Angeles roughly two years ago because I love the weather here—and the beautiful women. And I earned my degree in writing at a local university almost a decade ago.
I moved back East after obtaining my degree and ran a wholesaling business, but as mentioned, I moved back to Los Angeles two years ago.
I’m always looking for ways to make extra money. And the wholesaling business did pretty well—but when the recession hit the company I was selling to was bought by an even larger company and I had trouble moving inventory.
And to make matters worse, my stock portfolio was taking a crap on my head. So I moved back to Los Angeles to pursue writing jobs—and I even worked as a copywriter at a media company.
Now here’s where it gets important:
This company was formed three years prior and they sold both informational products (self-help video programs) and some supplements and beauty products. They had around thirty people working for them and I wrote for them as an independent contractor for a duration of two months.
These guys had mediocre products and they weren’t awfully good at promoting—but they were making $6 million a year. Amazing! And think about how much more they’d make if they had better products!
While working there, I realized how lucrative informational products truly are. And I wanted to create an informational how-to program of my own, and I also have a few tangible products I would like to create, have made, and sell.
So I decided that I should be an affiliate first, for I could use the money generated as an affiliate marketer to create my own programs/products.
But I had no idea how to market and sell online. I mean, there are a lot of facets involved. Thanks to my job at the media company, I knew how to write and learned how to create a website. But I didn’t know how to collect e-mails for a mailing list or how to purchase ads on popular websites.
But as luck would have it, around this time, I was getting bombarded with e-mails by a bunch of the e-mail lists I subscribe to. It was for a video program promising to teach me how to be an affiliate marketer. And when I watched the video for the program, I was pretty impressed…

The narrator of DotComSecrets X is named Russell Brunson. And I immediately realized he was unlike the other online marketing guys out there today. I say this because Russell just seems like a genuinely nice guy; a genuinely nice, super intelligent guy.
He promised to teach me everything I needed to know about making money online and it would only cost me $1 for the first month.
I thought that was pretty awesome. And I figured I could afford a dollar.
And I admit—this was the first online marketing program I had ever paid a penny to; because most other marketers wanted at least $47 for their programs. And although $47 might not be a lot of money, it just didn’t seem that great a deal to me.
And I now realize that offering his program for only $1 proves Russell Brunson is a marketing genius. Because he got me to buy the program—and if he can get me to buy, he knows what he’s doing and he has a lot to teach me!
So let’s talk about the program. There’s a lot of information contained within it, but it’s structured really well. Every day, you spend a few minutes watching his daily video.
They roughly run around five minutes each, and on some days, there are two videos, but I promise they’re not so bad… after all, you’re learning things that will make you money!
And I strongly advise you take notes as you’re watching the videos (you can pause the videos and watch them multiple times). I opened a Word document and typed my notes.
And I should add, Russell sometimes gives ‘homework assignments’. But the good news is these assignments are things you’re putting to use.
For example, toward the beginning of the program, for one homework assignment Russell tells you to choose roughly half a dozen products you want to be an affiliate for. This is something you’ll need to do anyways, and Russell’s assignment is merely a way to get it done quickly and easily.
And the next day, Russell shows you how to promote these products, and you’re well on your way to making money.
This program teaches SO MUCH. I still go back to the videos and watch them. He not only shows how you can purchase solo ads for dirt cheap (to promote your product), but how to get FREE ads to promote your product! And I tried and these free ads ACTUALLY WORK!
And I should mention that if you’re interested in producing your own program or product, Russell not only teaches you how to create a program or product but he also tells what niches are most profitable.
And he even has a team of website builders, so if you don’t want to go through the trouble of creating your own website, you can pay to have a member of Russell’s team do all the work for you.
Also, one thing I found to be super useful is the step-by-step instructions Russell provides toward how to write e-mails that will successfully sell a product to your e-mail subscribers.
I hadn’t considered it, but I quickly realized how essential a tool the e-mail list truly is. Russell is all about building your list, because it’s the best way to sell your program or product (or the program/product you’re an affiliate for).
A lot of the notes I took pertain to the e-mail list aspect of this program. And although learning even one useful point is well worth the $1 I paid for the first month of the program, I can honestly say that the e-mail list advice alone has made me thousands of dollars I wouldn’t have otherwise made.
So much of this program is awesome, but I found the information on the aspects I wasn’t knowledgeable on (mainly the e-mail list and how to buy ads) is worth so much more.
$1 can get you a hamburger from a fast food menu or an item at the dollar store…
…but now, $1 can get you an informational program that can earn you thousands of dollars….
Sounds like a pretty good deal to me!
